Eastern Cape Police authorities clamp down on illegal liquor outlets

Eastern Cape: Queenstown Operation Keys supported by the MEC for Transport, Safety and Liaison

The MEC for Transport Safety and Liaison in the Eastern Cape, Ms Weziwe Tikana together with the Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga formed part of Operation Keys at Queenstown Cluster last night until this morning.

All taverns from Queenstown, Mlungisi, Ezibeleni and Ilinge were visited. One problematic tavern where several crimes emanate from Queenstown was closed for non-compliance whilst another one was also closed at Ilinge.

Despite several warnings being issued to the owner of Mathousand Tavern in Queenstown, last night it had been shut down and the keys for the tavern were handed to the Sector Manager, Sgt Nomtandazo Qina.

Councillors from Enoch Mgijima Council also joined the team and assisted in checking the tampering of electricity at taverns. The culprits had their electricity switched off until the bill has been paid.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Ntshinga commended the members for their co-operative spirit and encouraged them to continue with their good work in serving the community. She said, “You must keep it up and continue patrolling the taverns and let the community feel the presence of the police. #EasterWeekend #PoliceVisibility #SaferCommunities
