Three police officers and a police reservist from KwaZulu-Natal were released on R500-00 bail each when they appeared before the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court following their arrest for corruption along the Berg Street, Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday night.
The three officers and reservist allegedly demanded and received R5 000 from a suspect whom they had arrested for possession of mandrax tablets and whoonga to the estimated street value of R5 000-00.
The officers took the money and released the suspects, but little did they know that their actions were spotted by the Crime Intelligence members who alerted the Hawks. During their arrest the officers were found in possession of the cash and drugs inside their official vehicle. They will appear in court again on 8 July 2016.
