Several drug arrests made during roadblock in Cape Town CBD

Operation Paseka, conducted through the night until the early hours of this morning in the Cape Town CBD with special emphasis on the Long Street night life delivered the desired results. Law enforcement officers from various agencies assisted SAPS to boost our operational numbers and maintain high police visibility which saw large numbers of uniformed officers patrolling the streets.

Our endeavours to maintain law and order resulted in 27 vehicles and 37 persons searched at random roadblocks. Fines to the tune of R97 500 were issued for a total of 184 offences at these roadblocks.

Two suspects were arrested for robbery, six for the possession of drugs, one for dealing in drugs, one for the possession of counterfeit money and seven for driving under the influence of alcohol. Two suspects who were wanted for theft and assault were also arrested. Seized items comprised drugs, cash, counterfeit money, counterfeit clothing and stolen credit cards.

SAPS will deploy operational members in high numbers during the long weekend and conduct various crime fighting initiatives to ensure a peaceful holiday period.
