Police warns – Don’t go swimming when intoxicated!

Members of the Search and Rescue Unit will be out in full force on all the major dams in the province during the festive season to ensure the safety of those taking to the waters.

The whole of the province is currently experiencing very hight temperatures and with many people on holiday it is sure that they will take to the water to cool down and enjoy themselves.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Limpopo, Lt Genl Fannie Masemola is requesting members of the community to work with the Police to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday period for all.

“Over exessive alcohol consumption remains a challenge to the Police in the province as it leads to the committing a several crimes and people on the water must know that no alcohol is allowed on any type of vessel on the water,” he said.

Skippers must also adhere to all the conditions and terms set out on their skippers license. Members will check their certificate of competency as well as their certificate of buoyancy.
Vessels will be inspected to check whether life jackets are available and whether the kill switch of the boats are in working order.
People must also take note that children of 12 years and under must always wear life jackets when on the water.
People who are not rated to be on the water after dark will also be cautioned to leave the water from 18:00.

All these measures are in place to ensure that people have a safe and joyous holiday period and to prevent tragedy such as death or even serious injuries from occurring.

Parents are advised to always know where their children are and not let them go swimming unsupervised.
