Drunk driving blitzes net 169 across Eastern Cape

A total of 169 people were arrested for drunk driving in the Eastern Cape at the weekend.

Arrive Alive spokesman Tshepo Machaea said most arrests had been made in the Buffalo City area, where a joint operation was conducted. Other people were arrested in Mount Frere, Aliwal North and Port Elizabeth, where operations were also held.

In an unrelated incident, an SA Road Link bus driver was arrested in Mount Frere for driving an unroadworthy vehicle.

Machaea said the driver had initially been stopped in Queenstown and told to go to the nearest repair station after tests revealed that the bus’s brakes had failed.

“When he got to East London, he loaded passengers and drove to Mt Frere, even though he had been told to fix the vehicle.”

The bus had been confiscated, Machaea said.

The driver and the people arrested for drunk driving will appear in local magistrate’s courts.
